From My Heart To You
BARTHOLOMEW
Bartholomew's name appears on the lists of the apostles
given in Matthew, Mark, Luke and the Acts, and in each
list his name is associated with Philip. But beyond
the fact that he was one of the Twelve there is no
further information about him. John does not mention
the name Bartholomew at all, but he does state that
Philip brought Nathanael to Jesus. This, coupled with
the fact that the New Testament lists of the apostles
associate Philip with Bartholomew, makes it probable that
Bartholomew and Nathanael are one and the same person.
Popular traditions concerning Bartholomew maintain that
he preached in India and then went to Greater Armenia
where, after many conversions, he was flayed alive and
beheaded on the orders of King Astyages, at Albanopolis on
the shore of the Caspian Sea. It is indeed possible that
Bartholomew preached and died in Armenia, as the tradition
of later historians of that region maintains.
Eusebius writes that Pantanenus, in the third century,
found in India some people who had knowledge of Christ.
He tells us that they showed Pantanenus a copy of St.
Matthew's Gospel in Hebrew which, they held, had been
brought there by Bartholomew when he came to preach. It
should, however, be remembered that the early writers
used the name "India" quite indiscriminately, and it is
probable that the "India" visited by Pantaenus was Ethiopia
or Arabia.
So little do we know of Bartholomew! Yet it was the quiet
dedicated work of Bartholomew and many men like him that
spread the Christian message far and wide during the first
century. The life of Bartholomew teaches us that the truly
dedicated man is not interested in popular acclaim. He
cares only about doing his duty.
Matthew 10:2-4
Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first,
Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James
the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;
Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican;
James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was
Thaddaeus;
Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

WE'LL UNDERSTAND IT BETTER BYE AND BYE
We are tossed and driven
on the restless sea of time;
Somber skies and howling tempests
oft succeed a bright sunshine;
In that land of perfect day,
when the mists have rolled away,
We will understand it better by and by.
Bye and bye, when the morning comes,
When the saints of God are gathered home,
We will tell the story how we've overcome,
For we'll understand it better by and by.
We are often destitute
of the things that life demands,
Want of food and want of shelter,
thirsty hills and barren lands;
We are trusting in the Lord,
and according to God's Word,
We will understand it better by and by.
Bye and bye, when the morning comes,
When the saints of God are gathered home,
We will tell the story how we've overcome,
For we'll understand it better by and by.
Trials dark on every hand,
and we cannot understand
All the ways that God could lead us
to that blessed promised land;
But He guides us with His eye,
and we'll follow till we die,
For we'll understand it better by and by.
Bye and bye, when the morning comes,
When the saints of God are gathered home,
We will tell the story how we've overcome,
For we'll understand it better by and by.
